This patio backs up to open desert, so the planting beds along the wall and fence needed to look like they belonged there.
We started underground. A trench along the fence carries new drip line to every plant, so each one gets slow, deep water right at the roots instead of spray that evaporates in the heat. Then we planted barrel cactus, agave and small succulents and topped the beds with red rock that matches the desert beyond the fence.
The photos show the build from trench to finished beds, including the drip line and valve before the rock went down.
