What You Need to Know About Natural Stone Patios
Design Planning
Natural stone patios require careful planning because every stone is different. We start with a site visit to assess grade, drainage, and access, then work with you to select the stone type and layout style that fits your home and landscape. Irregular flagstone creates a casual, organic feel while dimensional stone in consistent sizes produces a more structured look. We create a layout plan that accounts for the natural variation in your chosen material.
Stone Selection
We source natural stone from regional quarries in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Midwest. Options include Fond du Lac limestone, Chilton stone, bluestone from the northeast, and various local fieldstone varieties. Each stone type has different characteristics--thickness, surface texture, color range, and slip resistance. We help you select a stone that performs well in Minnesota weather while matching the aesthetic you want. All our stone selections are rated for freeze-thaw durability.
Pricing
Natural stone patios typically cost more than manufactured pavers due to material costs and the skilled labor required to fit irregular pieces. Pricing varies with stone type (bluestone and premium limestone cost more than fieldstone or Fond du Lac), thickness, and layout complexity. Dry-laid installations over a compacted base are more affordable than mortar-set stone on a concrete slab. We provide detailed estimates that reflect your specific stone choice and site conditions.
Installation
Natural stone patio installation demands patience and craftsmanship. We excavate to proper depth, install geotextile fabric and a compacted gravel base, then set each stone individually--fitting pieces together like a puzzle to minimize gaps and create a stable, level surface. Joints are filled with polymeric sand or planted with creeping thyme and other low-growing ground covers depending on your preference. Proper pitch ensures water drains away from structures. Each stone is checked for wobble and adjusted until the surface is solid enough to set furniture on without rocking.
