Living at the foot of South Mountain

Ahwatukee, officially the Ahwatukee Foothills Village of Phoenix, is bordered by South Mountain Park and Preserve to the north and the Gila River Indian Community to the south and west. Interstate 10 runs along its east side. Most homes are in HOA communities built from the 1970s onward, and many neighborhoods along the southern and western edges back right up to the mountain preserve.

Local conditions and what grows well

Foothill lots near South Mountain have rocky, granite-based soil and native vegetation right over the back wall, while older neighborhoods closer to the freeway often have grass and mature non-native trees. Both can benefit from desert plants:

  • Preserve-edge yards: Foothills palo verde, ironwood, brittlebush, creosote and ocotillo blend with South Mountain's natural desert.
  • Older yards going lower-water: Desert Museum palo verde, mesquite and Chinese pistache for shade, with Texas ranger and Baja fairy duster beneath.
  • Accents: Agaves, golden barrel cactus, red yucca and desert spoon.
  • Wildlife-friendly color: Penstemon, chuparosa and desert marigold, which attract hummingbirds and native bees.

Yards that back onto the preserve see more wildlife traffic, so tough, spiny and native plants usually hold up better than tender ones. Our cactus and agave planting page has ideas for those edges.

Phoenix grass removal incentive

Because Ahwatukee is part of Phoenix, homes on City of Phoenix water may qualify for the city's residential grass removal incentive. The city's program page describes it as $2 per square foot of grass removed, with approval required before work starts. Check the current program rules on phoenix.gov to confirm eligibility.

Best seasons to plant

Fall is the top planting season in Ahwatukee, since warm soil and cooler air help roots grow before summer. Spring is a good time for cactus and agaves. Foothill lots on South Mountain's slopes drain fast, so new plants may need slightly more frequent watering during their first summer than plants on flatter ground.
