What You Need to Know About Front Yard Landscaping
Design Consultation
Front yard design starts with your home. We evaluate the architectural style, existing hardscape, sun and shade patterns, soil conditions, and how the front yard connects to the street and neighboring properties. We discuss your priorities--low maintenance, seasonal color, privacy, or a complete transformation--and design a plan that balances aesthetics with practical concerns like sightlines for safety, snow storage zones, and irrigation access. You will see a visual plan with plant selections and layout before we start any work.
Plant and Material Selection
Front yard plantings need to look good twelve months a year in Minnesota. We select a mix of evergreen structure plants (boxwood, arborvitae, spruce) for winter presence, deciduous shrubs for seasonal color and texture, perennials for bloom from May through October, and ornamental grasses for movement and fall interest. Hardscape materials--pavers, edging, boulders, decorative stone--are chosen to complement your home exterior. Every plant is zone-rated for 4b through 5a and selected for its mature size so beds stay proportional without constant pruning.
Pricing
Front yard landscaping costs depend on the scope of the project. A foundation bed refresh with new plants and mulch is the most affordable starting point. Full front yard renovations that include removing old plantings, regrading, new walkways, landscape lighting, and comprehensive planting plans are a larger investment with significant impact on property value and daily enjoyment. We provide itemized estimates that separate design, demolition, hardscape, plant material, and installation so you can prioritize what matters most.
Installation
Front yard installation is visible to the whole neighborhood, so we work efficiently and keep the site clean throughout the project. We remove old plantings and prep beds first, then install hardscape features (walkways, edging, boulders), followed by planting and mulching. Soil is amended with compost where needed to improve the heavy clay common across the Twin Cities. Every plant is set at the correct depth with proper spacing for its mature size. We install 3 inches of premium hardwood mulch, define clean bed edges, and restore any turf disturbed during construction. The finished product looks polished from day one.
