What You Need to Know About Fire Pits
Design and Permitting
Fire pit placement is driven by local fire codes, setback requirements, and how you want to use the space. Most Twin Cities municipalities require fire pits to be at least 10 to 25 feet from structures, property lines, and overhanging trees. We handle the permitting process for your city and design the fire feature to meet all local regulations. During the design phase, we discuss fuel type (wood vs. gas), pit size, seating layout, wind patterns, and how the fire pit integrates with your existing or planned hardscape.
Materials
Fire pits demand materials that can handle extreme temperature swings--both from the fire itself and from Minnesota winters. We build with fire-rated block, natural stone, and steel inserts designed for outdoor use. Gas fire pits use marine-grade burner pans with electronic or match-lit ignition systems. Decorative media options include lava rock, fire glass, and tumbled stone. Cap stones are selected for heat resistance and comfort, since the pit edge doubles as a place to set a drink or rest an arm.
Pricing
Fire pit costs range based on size, fuel type, materials, and surrounding features. A basic wood-burning stone fire ring is the most affordable option. Gas fire pits cost more due to the burner system, gas line connection, and controls. Custom shapes, premium stone, integrated seat walls, and lighting add to the investment. We provide clear estimates that itemize materials, labor, gas line work (if applicable), and any permit fees so you know the full cost before we start.
Installation
Every fire pit starts with a proper foundation. We excavate and compact a gravel base, then build up the pit walls with fire-rated materials and a steel liner to protect the masonry from direct heat. For gas fire pits, we coordinate with a licensed plumber for the gas line connection and install the burner pan, valve, and ignition system. Drainage is built into the base so the pit does not collect water after rain. The surrounding area is finished with matching pavers or stone to create a clean, functional gathering space. We test gas systems thoroughly and walk you through operation before calling the project complete.
